Project Brief

Second-year university project to design a website prototype exploring one of three routes: type specimen, hobby, or place. I chose to create a digital showcase for Fayte, a display typeface by That That Foundry, which I admire for its striking personality and historical roots.

Design Approach

Fayte originates from blackletter calligraphy—the angular, dramatic letterforms found in Gothic architecture and medieval manuscripts. Rather than presenting the font in a purely historical context, I wanted to bridge past and future: honouring its calligraphic roots while demonstrating its relevance in contemporary design.

The website balances reverence with modernity. Dark, atmospheric visuals reference Gothic architecture, while cutting-edge animations and sleek UI elements bring the experience firmly into the present. High-quality mockups show Fayte in real-world applications—proving its versatility beyond decorative or novelty use.

Deliverables

  • UI/UX Design – Full responsive website prototype
  • Art Direction – Visual language bridging historical and modern aesthetics
  • Graphic Assets – Mockups, illustrations, animated elements

Key Features

  • Type Specimen Display – Full character set, weights, and stylistic alternates
  • Historical Context – Visual references to blackletter origins and Gothic influences
  • Modern Application – Mockups demonstrating the typeface in contemporary branding and editorial contexts
  • Interactive Elements – Animation concepts and micro-interactions enhancing user engagement

Tools

Adobe XD, Illustrator, Photoshop

Outcome

A visually rich type specimen prototype that celebrates Fayte's Gothic heritage while positioning it as a bold, versatile choice for modern designers—demonstrating both historical appreciation and contemporary UI design skills.
